Great Indian Gaurs

Took these pictures in Mudhumalai/Bandhipur  Range( except for the last picture) . They are the Indian Gaurs.
The word gaur (Sanskrit: gau) is cognate with the English word "cow".

Gaur are said to look like water buffalo at the front and domestic cattle at the back. The dark brown coat is short and dense. There is a shoulder hump, especially pronounced in adult males.

We saw a cute calf with the mother. The mother was very protective of the calf, always making sure that she was inbetween the jeep and the calf.

Gaur have one calf (or occasionally two) after a gestation period of about 275 days . Calves are typically weaned after seven to twelve months. The lifespan of a gaur in captivity is up to thirty years.

This picture was taken in Kabini. It was pouring and we were on a trail behind a tiger. Couldn't sight the Tiger, but we were lucky to see the Mother Gaur with the calve,s taking shelter from the rain underneath a tree.
It was a beautiful sight.
